The river cruising boom shows no signs of slowing. Europe welcomed 1.5 million river cruise passengers in 2025, up 8% from the year before, as travelers increasingly trade crowded ocean liners for quieter waterway journeys. Now AmaWaterways is betting big on continued growth by launching its most ambitious vessel yet.

Meet the AmaRudi. Arriving on the Danube in April 2027, this 443-foot floating hotel will become Europe's largest river cruise ship. To put that in perspective: it measures 135 meters from bow to stern and carries 196 passengers plus 70 crew members. That's not just bigger than what you'll find elsewhere on the continent's rivers. It's a complete rethinking of how much comfort and choice you can pack onto a riverboat.

A Ship Named After a River Pioneer

The vessel honors Rudi Schreiner, AmaWaterways' co-founder, who grew up along Austria's Danube. In a statement, Schreiner spoke to what this ship means: "AmaMagna changed what travelers believed was possible on a river cruise ship. We knew there would be a right time to revisit that concept, and with river cruising continuing to grow, that time is now." He continued, "Having this new ship carry my name makes it especially meaningful. I see it as part of the legacy we have built together over more than two decades."

The AmaRudi is actually a sister ship to the AmaMagna, which also pushed boundaries when it launched. But this new vessel goes further, giving passengers something many thought impossible on a river cruise: genuine space and variety.

What to Expect Onboard

This isn't your typical river barge with a few dining options. The AmaRudi offers 98 staterooms and enough onboard amenities to rival some land-based resorts. Passengers can swim in a pool, stay sharp with pickleball, unwind at the spa, or hit the fitness room. Entertainment spans multiple decks, and the dining scene is particularly strong. You'll have Journey's Restaurant for main courses, The Chef's Table for something special, Rudi's Wine Bar (naturally), and a Deck Club barbecue for casual meals. Europeans know their way around food and drink, and this ship is designed for those who expect quality in both.

The inaugural voyage departs April 11, 2027, from Vilshofen, Germany, and sails toward Budapest. That route captures some of the Danube's most stunning stretches, from Bavarian riverbanks to Hungarian plains.

Part of a Massive Expansion

The AmaRudi is not an isolated project. AmaWaterways announced plans in 2026 to expand its global fleet to more than 50 ships by 2032, including 15 new vessels in Europe. Before the AmaRudi even launches, the AmaNubia will debut on the Nile in September 2026. Following the AmaRudi in 2027, expect the AmaMaya on the Mekong and the AmaFiora on the Rhine.

Catherine Powell, CEO of AmaWaterways, framed the expansion boldly: "River cruising is on a clear growth trajectory, and we are investing with purpose, expanding our global footprint while continuing to elevate the experience for our guests and our travel partners."

For travelers, this timing couldn't be better. As European heat intensifies each summer, river cruises offer relief and escape without the environmental concerns of traditional ocean cruise tourism. You're moving slowly through medieval towns, sampling local wines, and cooling off in the water itself. It's travel at human speed.

The AmaRudi represents confidence that river cruising isn't a niche trend but a genuine shift in how travelers explore Europe. And if you're considering experiencing it, mark your calendar for spring 2027 when this floating palace takes to the Danube.
