Etihad Airways has made history by launching the first direct air link between Luxembourg and Abu Dhabi, becoming the first Middle Eastern carrier to touch down at the Grand Duchy's airport. The inaugural flight, EY51, arrived on the morning of 21 October 2026 to a traditional water cannon salute, marking a new chapter for travelers in the heart of Europe.

The route was initially planned as a three-times-weekly service, but strong demand since tickets went on sale in January 2026 prompted Etihad to boost it to four weekly flights. That's a clear signal that the connection between these two very different worlds is already proving popular.

On board, the airline deploys its Airbus A321LR, a nimble long-range jet configured with three classes. First and Business passengers get fully flat beds and direct aisle access, while Economy travelers enjoy 4K entertainment screens and high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the cabin. It's a full-service experience from the very first flight, something Etihad's CEO Antonoaldo Neves was keen to emphasize.

Why This Route Matters

For passengers from Luxembourg, as well as neighboring Belgium, France, and Germany, this new link offers a direct gateway to the UAE capital and, crucially, onward connections through Zayed International Airport. From Abu Dhabi, Etihad's network stretches across Asia, Australia, and the Indian subcontinent, with popular destinations like Phuket, Bangkok, Hanoi, Seoul, Tokyo, Sydney, and Colombo all within easy reach.

Leisure travelers heading to Abu Dhabi will find plenty to fill their days, from the stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque to the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Island's beaches, and Yas Island's theme parks. And if you're just passing through, Etihad's Abu Dhabi Stopover program offers eligible passengers up to two complimentary hotel nights, a handy perk for breaking up a long journey.

Traveling in the other direction, visitors can explore Luxembourg's UNESCO-listed old town, wander the Moselle vineyards, or hike the dramatic rock formations of the Müllerthal region, often called Luxembourg's Little Switzerland.

A Boost for Luxembourg's Connectivity

Alexander Flassak, CEO of lux-Airport, welcomed the arrival with open arms. "We are delighted to welcome Etihad Airways as the first airline from the Middle East to serve Luxembourg Airport," he said. The airport serves passengers from across the Grand Duchy and the Greater Region, and this new nonstop route to Abu Dhabi opens up a world of possibilities.

The launch comes at a time when Luxembourg's own national carrier, Luxair, has delayed its planned services to the UAE. According to Aviation Week, Luxair postponed its seasonal Dubai flights until February 2027 and deferred its Abu Dhabi service until late 2027, citing ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region. That leaves Etihad as the sole operator on this corridor for now.

Etihad's expansion in 2026 has been aggressive, with new routes across Europe, Africa, North America, and the Middle East. The airline now serves more than 110 destinations worldwide, and this Luxembourg link is a key piece of that puzzle. For travelers, it means more choice and more convenience when planning trips to the Gulf and beyond.

If you're thinking about booking, the timing might be worth considering. As with any new route, early fares can be surprisingly competitive. And if you're planning a bigger journey, the stopover deal in Abu Dhabi could make a long-haul trip to Asia or Australia feel like two vacations in one.
