Sweden just reframed what luxury actually means. Forget penthouses and private jets. The country is now giving away something far more precious: an entire island, all to yourself, for a full year.
The initiative, called Your Swedish Island, is run by Visit Sweden and welcomes international applicants aged 18 and above. There's one notable exclusion, though. Billionaires cannot apply. The reasoning behind this quirk reveals the campaign's true philosophy: the experience should go to people who truly value quiet, creativity, and stewardship over raw wealth.
What Exactly Are You Winning?
Five lucky winners will become Official Guardians of their islands, not their owners. You get a one-year right-of-use agreement that lets you camp, swim, paddle around, and host friends. But here's the catch: under Sweden's Right of Public Access law (Allemansrätten), you won't have exclusive access. Other people can pass through your island and even camp briefly. It's a brilliant twist that teaches responsibility rather than possession. You're caring for nature on behalf of everyone, not hoarding it.
The prize package also includes round-trip travel for two people to Sweden, plus a voucher worth up to SEK 20,000 (about €18,000), valid between June 2026 and May 2027. Winners are expected to participate in promotional activities and let Visit Sweden share their story publicly.
Five Different Escapes Await
Each island has its own personality. Tjuvholmen sits near Lidköping, cradled by pine forests and overlooking the massive Lake Vänern. Medbådan, sculpted by ancient ice ages, offers a mix of woodland patches and calm swimming waters ideal for paddling. For something wilder, Skötbådan and Storberget deliver rocky coastlines and open ocean views that take the full force of wind and waves. On the west coast, Marsten stands out with pale stone formations and clear waters beloved by anglers.
All of them require a journey to reach. You'll need a kayak, paddleboard, or boat to get there, which means the adventure starts the moment you leave the mainland. Visit Sweden's official site has detailed information about each island and nearby attractions, so you can see which setting calls to you.
How to Apply
The application process is straightforward but creative. Submit a video no longer than one minute explaining why you deserve to become an island guardian. Use the official form to send your entry by April 17, 2026 at 11:59 pm. Sharing your video on social media with the hashtag #YourSwedishIsland can boost your odds, though it's optional.
A jury of Visit Sweden representatives and partner organisations will review submissions, hunting for creativity, genuine enthusiasm for nature, and a clear grasp of what guardianship means. Winners get announced in May 2026.
Redefining What Luxury Means
With over 267,000 islands scattered across its archipelago, Sweden has a certain authority when it comes to wild spaces. This campaign sends a powerful message: true luxury isn't something you buy. It's measured in silence, simplicity, and the chance to live close to nature without destroying it.
For one year, five people will discover what it feels like to be custodians of their own slice of Swedish wilderness. You'll balance solitude with adventure, responsibility with freedom. Some might call that a vacation. Others might call it a complete reset.
